Descartes Mponge Malasi

Democratic Republic of Congo Senior Officer

Descartes is a lawyer finishing a master’s in conflict jointly delivered by UNITAR and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
 
Before joining NRGI, Descartes worked at the U.N. Joint Human Rights Office in the DRC.
 
He participated in several research, joint investigation teams and advocacy programs at the regional and international level on natural resources exploitation (forestry, mining and land) and its connection with armed conflicts, corruption and human rights violations in the DRC and the Great Lakes region. Descartes has experience working on the issue of massive acquisition of land and the rights of local communities and indigenous peoples. Previously, Descartes was Executive Director of ACADHOSHA, an NGO in special consultative statute with ECOSOC. Descartes is a former board chairperson of the DRC Natural Resources Network, with more than 250 environmental organizations.
 
Descartes has more than 10 years’ experience in monitoring the legality and traceability of natural resources extracted in the DRC. He was REDD+ national expert on behalf of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
