Azerbaijan Must Release Gubad Ibadoglu

NRGI joins Human Rights Watch, the civil society constituency of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative board and other civil society organizations in calling for the immediate release of Gubad Ibadoglu from detention in Azerbaijan. Ibadoglu was a steadfast partner in NRGI’s past efforts to make Azerbaijan’s extractive industries more transparent, and to hold the government to account for the use of revenues from the oil sector.

The circumstances of Ibadoglu’s detention suggest that it is politically motivated. NRGI therefore calls on authorities in Azerbaijan to immediately release Ibadoglu and allow all Azerbaijani citizens to engage in open civic dialogue, including about the policies and actions of the country’s government.
