Labor, Gender and Capitalist Accumulation in Peru

Among the results of a “race to the bottom” in relation to socioeconomic policies that favor deregulation and limited state social welfare systems‚ one important global consequence has been the general precarization of labor (ECLAC 2016; Standing 2014). This panel will highlight the impact of this process on vulnerable women and adolescent workers in Peru‚ providing quantitative and qualitative analyses on how capitalist accumulation shapes their gender roles and contributes to their exploitation and/or subordination both as women and as workers. We provide three vantage points: the mining sector‚ the Quechua textile tradition; and child domestic work.
