Companies operating in the oil, gas and mining sector spend as much as USD 1 trillion a year on the procurement of goods and services. Procurement at this level carries both risks and opportunities. While supplier contracts can be vulnerable to corruption, the scale of spending can also create opportunities for local companies to derive economic benefit from extractives projects.

Research published by the NRGI shows suppliers have played a part in corruption scandals and foreign bribery cases in at least 29 countries across five continents. While many companies and governments recognise the importance of supplier transparency, key information about suppliers and procurement processes is not yet routinely disclosed.

This webinar, organized by EITI, provided a forum for sharing existing examples of good practice in disclosing and using supplier information. Building on such examples, it aimed to help governments, extractive companies, civil society and the media consider how data can be published and used to reduce corruption risks and promote trust and accountability.

The webinar was moderated by Carey Kluttz, the Head of Country Programs for Open Contracting Partnership. It also featured high-level speakers from government, companies and civil society including:

  • Walid Nasr - Acting Chairman of the Board, Head of Strategic Planning Department, Lebanese Petroleum Administration
  • Robert Pitman – Senior Governance Officer, Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI)
  • Daniel Driscoll - Vice President, Legal & Compliance, Endeavour Mining
  • Sylvia Buchan - Supply Chain Manager, Oil and Gas Authority, UK
  • Ines Marques - Policy Director, EITI International Secretariat
